LOOKING FOR A CIVIC PROJECT FOR YOUR FAMILY OR BUSINESS?

Adopt-A-Hydrant is a project of the Haverhill Firefighting Museum, Haverhill's Water & Fire Departments and the Citizens of Haverhill

When you adopt you will receive a Hydrant Adoption Certificate, the supplies needed to clean/paint your hydrant and the sincere thanks of the City of Haverhill and the Fire Department.

The Adopt-A-Hydrant program encourages residents, business owners, students, and civic groups to adopt and maintain one or more fire hydrants close to their home, school or business.

A fresh coat of paint ensures that the hydrant is easily visible should it need to be used by our firemen.  In the winter, the fire hydrants may become buried in the snow, which makes it difficult for firefighters to locate and operate them in case of a fire.  Having to take time to shovel out a hydrant is valuable time lost that could have been spent containing a spreading fire.  A fire doubles in size every 30-seconds, so every second counts when firefighters are called to action.

More information can be provided by a Museum Employee.
Below are some of the details.

guidelines

  • Clear a 1-yard (3 foot) area around all sides of the hydrant, as well as a path to the street

  • Hand shoveling or snowblowing are the best options for clearing snow, do not use a snowplow

  • Do not toss snow or debris into the street/driveways/sidewalks or any other right of way

  • Please be aware of vehicle traffic and do not linger in the roadway

  • Only paint the hydrant as specified, please do not personalize

  • If you notice any damage or water leaking from the hydrant, please notify the Haverhill Water Department

Safety

  • Always wear highly visible clothing when cleaning/painting/clearing your hydrant, particularly in the winter months

  • If possible, have a second person as a 'lookout' for traffic or hazards

  • When clearing snow, be aware of traffic and do not linger in the roadway

  • Should you experience shortness of breath, chest pain or other health issues while clearing or painting your hydrant, stop immediately and call 911 or seek medical attention
